Kompositionsstudium an der Hochschule für Musik Lissabon bei António Pinho Vargas. Studium bei Nicolaus A. Huber und elektronische Musik im ICEM bei Dirk Reith und Günter Steinke an der Folkwang-Hochschule Essen.

Zusammenarbeit unter anderem mit dem ZKM, Jeunesses Musicales Deutschland, Deutscher Musikrat, Philharmonie Essen, Deutschland Rundfunk, Theater im Depot, Auswärtiges Amt, Kasseler Musiktage, MisoMusic, Gulbenkian-Stiftung und der Stiftung Christoph Delz.

Luís A. Pena unterrichtete Musikinformatik und Analyse an der Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. Seine Musik wird in Europa und den USA aufgeführt. Er gewann Preise anläßlich 25 Jahre Internationaler Elektroakustischer Wettbewerb, beim 11. Sommerseminar in Wien, bei den Kontest Óscar da Silva und Lopes Graça.

Im Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit steht die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Computer und diversen Formen der instrumentalen und elektronischen Resynthese als Kompositionsvorgang. Die Beschäftigung mit dem rhythmischen Aspekt des Klangs ist besonders relevant in den jüngeren Stücken.

Seit 2008 wird seine Musik von sumtone herausgebracht.

He studied composition at the Superior Music School of Lisbon and went to Germany in 1999 to study composition with Nicolaus A. Huber and electronic music at the ICEM with Dirk Reith and with Guenter Steinke at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen.

He has had commissions from different institutions such as the Deutscher Musikrat, the theater im Depot, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Jeneusses Musicales Deutschland
and the ZKM, the Gulbenkian-Foundation, the Foundation Christoph Delz.

His music has been played all over Europe and USA. He won composition prizes at the ECMC 25th Anniversary
International Electroacoustic Music Competition, at the 11th Summer Seminar from Vienna, at the contests Óscar
da Silva and Lopes Graça.

His compositions arise from intense focus upon computer-generated analysis and its instrumental and electronic transcription. Many of his pieces reflect a particular interest in the rhythmical aspects of sound.
